When I went off to university it was much more of an awesome experience than it is for many today. I had scraped into Oxford by the skin of my teeth, having spent too much of my teenage years doing everything else, particularly sport and music, rather than studying. And, in any case, I was from the north of England. I had only spent occasional holidays in the south. Coming as I did from a small town, I had never lived in a city, still less an ancient and stunningly beautiful one like Oxford. There was a mystique about the whole thing which, even in the ultra-cynical 1960s, you couldn’t ignore...
