My aunt hissed the words into my ear as the big dog came bounding up the street towards us. It seemed silly advice at the time. I was afraid. I was only seven years old and the previous year a small dog had bitten me, unprovoked. What might a big one do?

Swallowing my feelings, I walked on beside my aunt. The dog came to a stop, nosed all round us, and then set off back where he’d come from. He was only inquisitive. Had he known, however, that I was ready to run away, he’d have thought it was a game, and chased me . . .
