‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’
It’s the standard question children face from well-meaning adults. Often the answers are surprising. A ballet dancer. A gardener. This girl wants to run a bookshop. This boy wants to play the oboe. Sometimes the dreams are fantasies, and melt away in the light of grown-up life. Sometimes they are the first shoots of a deep sense of identity and vocation that come into full blossom and fruit later on. Children are aware, often with a sense of frustration, that there are basically two ‘ages’, childhood and adulthood, and that they have to wait before they can attempt to turn their dreams into reality – though one sign that the dream will become reality is the determination to begin in the present to study and train to make it happen...
