God’s Strange Wisdom
1 Corinthians 2.6-13

When my sister celebrated her 21st birthday, she and I were at university, a long way from home. So a cousin of my father’s, who lived nearby, invited the two of us to dinner to celebrate. He and his wife had no children of their own, and were eager to entertain us properly.

We had a wonderful meal and a delightful evening. As it drew towards a close, he produced the final touch. He had a bottle of brandy that was then 100 years old. He had been keeping it for a special occasion. He solemnly opened it, and poured everyone a glass. We sipped it equally solemnly, and told him how wonderful it was. We were truly grateful, but our praise meant nothing; we had neither of us ever tasted brandy before, and would not have been able to tell the difference between the contents of that bottle and a cheap one produced the previous week...
