How many names can you think of for God? It may sound an odd question. God’s proper name in the Old Testament is of course YHWH; but he is referred to in a great many other ways as well, such as ‘the Almighty’, the Holy One of Israel’, or ‘YHWH of Hosts’. He is, of course, regularly called ‘the God of Abraham’, sometimes with Isaac and Jacob added as well. Other, stranger names appear fleetingly; Jacob, apparently, knows God as ‘the Fear of his father Isaac’ (Genesis 31.42, 53) – at least until he wrestles with God face to face in the next chapter...
