Book III (Pss. 73-89)
Book III opens with “A Psalm of Asaph” (Ps. 73). Like the sons of Korah, Asaph was, according to the book of Chronicles, a temple singer during the reigns of David and Solomon. Fifteen of the seventeen psalms in Book III are attributed to Asaph and the sons of Korah. Only one psalm, Psalm 86, is attributed to David. The focus of the story of the Psalter is now on David’s descendants, who will determine the future of ancient Israel during the period of the divided kingdom…
