They were dark days for Amos. They are for us, too, quite literally at this time of year. Sometimes trying to do one’s bit on eco-matters is like running from a lion and meeting a bear (v 19). (Recycling paper may involve bleach being used, and this may affect river water quality.)
Matthew says that God doesn’t like the religious festivals. God wants actions, not words. The kingdom of heaven is, however, on its way, though we don’t know the day or the hour (v 13). There is a lot of uncertainty about climate change—but the day will come unless humankind somehow rises to the occasion...
