If we have been out in the dark, how comforting to see a lighted window; if we have been shut in, how refreshing when the light finds us.

Without windows a house is a tomb. We need light and air. We need the new day to enter our homes, to bring us out of the night’s slumber and out of our habits of inattention. Windows teach us to be transparent, to allow the flow of light both in and out...
