1 Kings 21:8-29


Sitting on the subway on the way home last night, I overheard a conversation between two young men about the candidates for our upcoming gubernatorial elections. (Isn’t that a great word, gubernatorial? We don’t have it in British English, presumably because we don’t have governors. The word gubernatorial rolls around your mouth, somehow.) One of them was lamenting the fact that the only reason people were in politics was to make money for themselves and that they spend much of their time swindling us ordinary people by means of taxes in order to spend the funds on prestige projects that are of little value to ordinary people. It reminded me of one or two news items I have noticed that have proclaimed this city or that city the corruption capital of the United States...
