When I first came to California, students would sometimes ask how long I would be here, thinking it might just be for sabbatical. At first I would reply, “I want to die here,” which was a way of saying, “I am here permanently,” but that made people look shocked, even made them recoil. I had mentioned death. You don’t talk about death in California, where people like to think it’s voluntary. The Bible likes talking about death.
