The day before yesterday was Education and Sharing Day in the United States, a day established in honor of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who died in 1994. During his lifetime some of his followers believed him to be the messiah, and some continue in that belief after his death. This year as in other years, on this day that commemorates him, a newspaper advertisement urges people to accept his kingship as messiah. It includes the explanation that “a Jewish king cannot declare himself king; he can only become king through the acceptance of the people.” It would be this acceptance that would lead to his resurrection and return as messiah. On a blog, someone commented, “Jewish kings don’t need the backing of the people to be declared king; all it takes is a bit of oil, a stream, and a prophet.”...
