One of my sons works for the U.K. Environment Agency in the department concerned with flood control, where he oversees projects designed to avoid flooding. In the past there have been occasions when terrible storms have caused the sea to flood major areas of some low-lying areas of Britain and other parts of Europe. Hurricane Katrina had an even more devastating effect on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in the United States in 2005. The heavens opened and never seemed to close; the floods rose, and it seemed they would never stop. In a situation like that, you can wonder how secure the land is. In the Middle Eastern world, too, this was not merely a matter of wondering. Floods happened. Genesis takes this fact and the stories that people told about floods as a basis for taking further its exposition of the relationship of God and the world...
