A talking snake? But this is a parable, remember. In Julia Bolden’s version of the story, the tempter is a parrot, and God’s ban concerns television; Adam and Eve are not to watch the good and- bad-knowledge channel. A parrot flies in through the window; it is continually talking to itself and admiring itself in the mirror. It squawks at Eve, “Not allowed to watch the telly, then?” (It’s a British parrot, a descendant of the one in Monty Python). In due course Eve goes from the kitchen to the lounge where Adam is doing his couch-potato imitation, grabs the remote, and switches to the forbidden channel. A voice from the set bids the two of them to stop being so content with what they have and to start thinking about a bigger house and more gadgets. A light on the screen gets brighter and brighter until it almost blinds them...
