Work Becomes Toil
Genesis 3: 17-22

As I cycle to the seminary to give an evening lecture, I pass a particular bus stop where there are always a number of people waiting for the bus to take them home, and I am always struck by how weary they look. Whatever they have been doing all day, evidently their work (and maybe the earlier stages of their journey home) has taken the life out of them. They will arrive home and sink in front of the television, or maybe have to gird themselves up to cook dinner for their family and only then sink in front of the television...
