At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Ottoman Empire undertook a systematic attempt to annihilate the Armenian people in Turkey. One to one and a half million people were killed. In the middle of the twentieth century, the Nazi government undertook a systematic attempt to annihilate the Jewish people in Germany. Six million people were killed. At the end of the twentieth century, one of the main ethnic groups in Rwanda undertook a systematic attempt to annihilate the other main ethnic group. Between half a million and a million people were killed. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Sudanese government and tribal groups within Sudan combined attack and neglect of other tribal groups to generate up to half a million deaths among the people of Darfur. One question such events provoke is “What kind of God allows this to happen?” Another question we might ask is, “What kind of creatures are human beings that we should cause and allow this to happen?”...
