A few years ago, a couple who were friends of mine left the seminary and moved to another part of the country; he, to be a pastor; she, to be a counselor. We kept in occasional touch through e-mail, and it eventually emerged that their marriage was in trouble and that they were separating. End of story, I imagined, as far as that marriage was concerned. But three weeks ago I had another e-mail. It turned out that the couple are back together and very hopeful for the future. There was a possibility of new life when I thought there was no such possibility...
