When my older son got into his midteens, he declared that he was no longer coming to church with his mother and me. Fortunately this was not because he had decided that all church was stupid but that our demure Anglican church wasn’t keen and lively enough; he intended to go to a more dynamic church with some of his friends. Obviously we were very glad that his rebellion against the parental stance on church was going to take this form and not mean simply giving up on church, and I used to go with him sometimes. On one of these occasions, the pastor preached on the verses from Psalm 104 that speak of bread, wine, and oil and talked about Jesus as the living bread, about the Holy Spirit who is poured out like wine, and about the anointing with power that God gives us...
