Some years ago I went through one of those periods when God didn’t seem to be real. I don’t mean I was going through some intellectual questioning, though I have done that at other times, but rather that I didn’t feel that God was there. I would go to the main seminary chapel service each week where I could see many people were having an enthusiastic “experience of God,” and I was just having an experience of coldness. When I said as much to someone after the service one time, he commented that maybe this experience was what God wanted for me at that time. It seems a pretty insensitive response, now that I think about it, but maybe he was right. Anyway, eventually the sense of coldness went away...
