I know some Christians who have had affairs, and I have come closer to doing so than I should have done. When Christians talk about their affairs, the story regularly involves an element of denial and/or self-deception. Maybe the people now have some insight about what they did, but they acknowledge that at the time they were deceiving themselves; they were denying the nature of their actions. Their marriage had gone stale; their spouses were no longer interested in them; this new love was so creative and life-giving, it surely must be a gift from God...
