Psalm 24


Five days before the Egyptian army crossed the Suez Canal in September 1973, aiming to recapture Sinai from Israel, I was in Sinai climbing what in Arabic is called “Mount Moses,” the mountain traditionally regarded as Mount Sinai in the Old Testament. From our campsite at the foot of the mountain we began the climb at dawn. Most of the group were Israelis, but as far as I could tell, there were few other people for whom climbing Mount Sinai had a religious significance; the weekend was part of the program of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. For me, it was a climb that inspired awe. All the way up the four thousand feet from our base camp, I found myself repeating words from Psalm 24. Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? The psalm refers to Mount Zion, but instinctively I felt that the same issues were raised by my setting foot on Mount Sinai...
