The people whom this second section of Isaiah
is addressing are completely worn out. They
have not even got the energy actively to reject
God and seek other sources of comfort. Instead,
they sit around and whine. Even the young are
slumped wearily, unable to summon up enthusiasm
for anything. They believe that they are utterly
forgotten and of no value to anyone, particularly
God, and this feeling of being despised and
neglected fills them with terrible lethargy. If
