...After the death of Princess Diana in 1997, ‘books of remembrance’ were placed in public buildings throughout Britain, and indeed in many other parts of the world, particularly in churches and cathedrals, so that people could sign their names as a tangible mark of their sorrow. Hundreds of thou- sands did so.

I read some of the contributions in the books in Lichfield Cathedral, where I worked at the time. I was struck by the remarkable range of beliefs about what happens after death. Several people spoke of Diana having become a star in the sky. Some wrote about God wanting her company and so taking her from us sooner than we’d expected. Again and again people wrote that she’d been an angel in disguise, and had now gone back to being a regular angel again – or that, having showed she was clearly angelic material, she had now graduated to being a proper one...
