Other people’s reactions are unpredictable. Some folk are lovely and supportive: they tell me they’ve encountered the problem before, and add, ‘So please don’t worry.’ The best of them reassure me of our welcome. They explain the special facilities that are available to make life easier.

Some share their experiences as carers, or the stories of people they’ve known in the caring role. One friend realized just too late that her story was going to include the death of her friend’s mother and stopped sharply in case it upset me. But that wouldn’t have upset me.
