Reflection: ‘We want a king.’


How many times a day do you think God shakes his head and wonders what on earth is going on in our minds? The number of times he tries to gently advise us on the best course of action and the number of times we totally ignore that advice and go on our own wilful way must be very frustrating indeed. It’s like telling a young child not to run too fast in case … … and then having to pick up the pieces and mend the grazed knees and the bump on the head that results as we are ignored.

It’s been happening since time began and will continue to do so until time ends. That’s human nature!

And Samuel has just come face to face with it – again!

‘We want a king.’ Is the demand of the elders of the Israelite people.

‘Your sons aren’t going to follow in your footsteps, Samuel, so we need another leader. We want to be like everyone else. They’ve all got kings, why can’t we have one of our own?’
