David Watson was a very eloquent and talented speaker who would illustrate his addresses with stories, anecdotes and jokes, using the same material also in his books. I remember listening to him and reading his work when I was a student; often a familiar story would be introduced to make the point. The story would start differently to ‘work it in’ to the flow of what he was saying, but usually the moral at the end would be the same. So too with his jokes: the setting, or characters, or dialogue might vary according to the need of his audience – but the punch line would be the same.
