I recently attended a very ordinary church service. There were probably around 40 people there, ranging from age 3 to 90, but with the overwhelming majority in the over-55s age range. Nothing was done with the worship to make it particularly accessible to the children. The hymns were traditional, the sermon was straightforward, the prayers and readings given from the lectern. The children remained in the church throughout. They didn’t even go to the special children’s area at the back. They were clearly at ease in this place and they felt included. The key? The minister liked the children, smiled at them, and with every word he uttered he had an intention of including them...
