Richard Holloway’s autobiography Leaving Alexandria: A memoir of faith and doubt tells the story of the author’s life, from his birth and upbringing in Scotland, through his training for the priesthood at the Society of the Sacred Mission at Kelham Hall in Nottinghamshire, his time spent in Ghana, and his ministry as Vicar of Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh, Rector of the Church of the Advent in Boston, Massachusetts, Bishop of Edinburgh, and Primus or Archbishop of the Scottish Episcopal Church, to the time when he finally stood down in 2000. He threw his mitre in the Thames, fed up with the church and God and bewildered about what was coming next. Now he walks in the hills in Scotland, still seeking meaning in his life…
