Meditation - Sunday before Lent Year B
2nd Kings 2: 1-12,Psalm 50, 2nd Corinthians 4: 3-6, Mark 9: 2-9


In the four readings for the Sunday before Lent, we see the main dramatis personae of the Passion assembled. “The god of this world” – Satan the blinder of eyes and resister of the gospel (2nd Corinthians 4 v 4), God, with a multiplicity of titles and attributes - the Mighty One, the Lord, judge – summoning the heavens and the earth to a celestial court (Psalm 50 v 1-6), and Jesus in whose face shines “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God” (2nd Corinthians 4 v 6). The transfiguration brings the Lord and his Son together, with Satan firmly excluded, for a brief, intense interlude...
