I was invited to give a lecture at Aberystwyth University in north Wales a few years back. How best to get there from Oxford, I wondered? Travelling by train turned out to be a bad idea as I would have to change at least three times, and there was the possibility of delay at several points. So I decided to drive. As it was a long way I consulted a map to work out where to have a break. The best route went through the rural county of Herefordshire, and the areas around several villages were marked on my map as being of ‘outstanding natural beauty’.
