The two teenagers were slumped in armchairs. Both of them had their headphones plugged into personal stereos, and had the faraway look of people being carried along by hidden sounds. One of them nodded her head gently in time with the beat. The other was clicking his fingers.
Neither gave any attention to what was happening at the other end of the room. There, at the piano, sat a guest of the family. The family hadn’t realized she was a famous pianist; she was a friend of a friend, who had needed a place to stay for a couple of nights. She was now practising for a concert. The gentle, powerful music flowed around the room, out into the hallway, and up the stairs, filling the house with beauty as surely as if all the spring flowers in the garden had suddenly released their scent...
