The word ‘colony’ today is not exactly popular. It rings of the old days of imperialism, when several European countries were expanding their influence in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and were vying with each other to see who could grab the wealthiest areas. To have a ‘colonial’ attitude is supposed, today, to mean being patronizing, perhaps bullying, looking down on local people in far-off lands as being an inferior species, good only to help increase the profits for the mother country back home...
