John 12.37-43

It was seven o’clock in the evening when Susan called the family in. She had worked hard all day to prepare this meal, and she was excited, eyes sparkling, on edge to see what they would say. Delicious smells came from the kitchen.

She sat them down at the table. The candlelight twinkled on the silver and glass. She went back to the kitchen and emerged with the first course, a spicy soup she had taken special care over. They began to eat, talking away about what they’d been doing all day. They thanked her politely as she cleared the dishes away, and there was a short pause as she put the finishing touches to the main course. It was a roast pheasant with every possible trimming and sauce, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The vegetables to go with it were done exactly right, with clever little touches to make them even more tasty...
