Matthew 12.1-14
Some years ago I read a book by a man who had worked most of his life with poor and homeless people in one of the toughest parts of London. It was a gritty tale of just how hard real life can be for some people – and of how the love of God can come into the middle of the squalor and sadness and change things for the better. At the heart of it, the writer stressed again and again that, despite the values of the society all around, which was prepared to leave people on the scrap-heap provided their own material comfort and affluence was assured, he believed that God cared more for a single human being than for all the trappings of wealth and fortune. The title of his book summed all this up in a well-known phrase: People Matter More Than Things...
