The Question about Divorce
Matthew 19.1-9

Last time we bought a car I was startled to notice, in the book of instructions, a list of things to do if you were involved in an accident. Call the police. Make a note of exactly what happened, where and how. Write down the registration numbers of other cars involved. And so on. There was also a section on how to cope if the car began to skid, or did other dangerous things.

Such a section is surprising because you don’t really expect the manufacturers of a car to want you to have an accident, to skid, to drive dangerously. (I suppose they might sell more cars if we went round smashing them up all the time, but I don’t think that’s the point.) And of course they don’t. They want you to drive safely, free of trouble, anxiety and danger. But sometimes people do get into difficult situations, and it’s important to know what to do if the occasion arises. It would be absurd to suggest that the people who wrote the instruction book were either hoping for such things to happen or even encouraging people to make them happen...
