Matthew 13.18-23

I stood still, puzzled. There was a high hedge to my right, and another one to my left. And now there was a third high hedge straight in front of me. The grass was flattened down in this small space. Clearly lots of other people had been here before me. I was in a maze, a huge formal labyrinth, laid out in the garden of a great country house. And now I was thoroughly lost.

I had thought it would be easy, but of course the people who design mazes know you will think that. They lure you in, encouraging you to make decisions about your direction which will then lead you into a series of dead ends. I was in one now. The others in my party, who had scorned my childish desire to try the maze, would be waiting for me. I gave in and took the map out of my pocket...
