When I taught in the university, one of my annual tasks was to interview candidates for admission the following year. The first time I did this, a young man came for interview who seemed quiet and subdued. He wasn’t very sure of himself, and didn’t always do well in answering questions. He seemed, though, to be intelligent, and my colleagues and I were puzzled about him. We went back and read again the letter of reference written about him by the headteacher of his school. ‘Very bright . . . lively mind . . . extremely able and intelligent . . . should do very well indeed . . .’ With some hesitation, we decided to admit him to the college to start the following year...
