The Christian Athlete
1 Corinthians 9.24-27
Last night on the television news I saw a sight which might have been funny if it hadn’t been so revolting. People, it seems, are getting bored with ordinary sports and games; so someone has had the bright idea of persuading (and presumably paying) people who are famous or notorious for quite other reasons to put on boxing kit and fight one another. First there were two men, former professional sportsmen long past their prime. Then, to my horror, there were two women, both of whom had been in the news because of something unpleasant or unsavoury. Needless to say they were hopeless boxers; they flailed around to make a spectacle, not to hurt each other. Male boxing is at best a sport that borders on ugliness and brutality. Female boxing seems to me quite abhorrent. Female boxing between two people whose only claim to fame is that they have been in the news for all the wrong reasons seems to drag entertainment down to . . . the level it was at in Paul’s day...
