Not long ago, some friends of ours came into possession of a large old house, and decided to do a first-class job of restoring it. To make sure all the details were taken care of, they hired a consultant to oversee all the bits and pieces, to advise them on colour, style and a thousand other things.

But from quite early on in the project, things started to go wrong. The consultant kept doing things our friends hadn’t intended, and ignoring things they had specifically requested. The story was long and complicated, but I’ve said enough to give you the picture. What was going on was a clash between the actual stated intentions of the owners of the property and the ideas of the consultant – who, as became increasingly clear, was really trying to make the house look the way he would have wanted it...
