Amazing! Wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.

Claudius is a great friend of mine, of course. We’ve known each other since we played together as children in the courtyard of my parents’ house in Rome. That was too many years ago now. We were taught by the same tutor, took part in all the races together and joined the army at the same time. We didn’t always get the same postings – didn’t expect that – but we had a feeling that we’d end up in Palestine at some time. So many soldiers did. And we weren’t all that happy about it either. The Jews were not easy people to work with. In fact they hardly worked with us at all, except for one or two who’d become used to Roman ways. Herod was the most prominent of them. Most of the others hated our guts, but then they hated every person who wasn’t a Jew, so we didn’t take it too personally.
