This was the job Daniel hated more than any other. He remained on his horse, some distance from the house, as the two estate henchmen, Gershon and Mazal, banged on the battered wooden door. Daniel knew Menachem would be inside, along with his wife, Naomi, and their three small children. Menachem had spent the day in the market square of the local town, hoping to be hired and earn one more denarius in his desperate attempt to raise the money he needed to pay off his mounting debts.
