Timon (the parable of the labourers in the vineyard – Matthew 20:1-16)

Timon cast his eyes around the other guests gathered in the room. It had been a long time since he had shared a meal with such a large number of people. Nowadays he would usually eat alone, or perhaps with one or two other day labourers, surviving on the scraps of food they could buy with their meagre wages.
Timon had become an expert in eking out his day’s pay of one denarius and making it last for two or three days. This he had to do because Timon wasn’t hired every day. A surplus of labourers in northern Galilee meant that the stewards from the great estates could pick and choose…
