The other day, I heard a story about a couple who have just had their home repossessed. Part of the story’s sadness was that it is not only the house where the wife had been born but the house where her father had been born. The couple had inherited it from her parents and lived there happily until they got into economic difficulties two or three years ago and took out a second mortgage. Then everything went wrong with the economy, and they hadn’t understood the implications of the refinancing they had arranged. It meant they lost their house. The financial adviser who had worked with them commented that it was his job to sell mortgages, not to warn people about the moves they were making. One reason Israel has provisions like these concerning the jubilee is that people always need protecting from such experiences...
