My parents married later in life than was usual in their day, and I previously mentioned that it was some years before I was born. My mother used to tell me she couldn’t imagine there was a baby more welcomed into the world than I was. A generation later when my wife and I married, we thought we could decide when to start a family but found we did not decide; a week after it was confirmed that Ann was unexpectedly pregnant, the British Medical Journal carried an article reporting that the contraceptive pill she was taking was less effective than some others, a fact that we were able to confirm. The unexpected baby was still very welcome. Another generation later, people often choose to delay marrying and then delay having a baby for career reasons, and then decide it’s time. . . . And sometimes this works out fine, but sometimes they, too, discover they have less control over these matters than they thought...
