Some friends of mine have just become pregnant. I am not accustomed to using that verb in the first-person plural; when I was young, it was only women who got pregnant, but now it is a joint operation. There is a certain appropriateness in this, because the event requires two people. When a couple cannot get pregnant, the problem may lie with the woman, or it may lie with the man, and presumably Israelites realized this. If a wife did not conceive, and her husband took a second wife in the hope that he might have better luck, but then the second wife did not conceive, presumably they put two and two together, even if they didn’t talk about it. These friends of mine went through all sorts of tests and established that the problem lay with the woman, and the doctors did some strange things to her about which I don’t want to know too much, and now she is four months pregnant. They are a lovely couple, and she is a loving person who will make a marvelous mother, so for all sorts of reasons I am excited, though no doubt nowhere near as excited as the couple and their parents...
