The Seventh Sunday of Easter
John 17.20-26
Gaze on the disciples, trudging down the hillside after the Ascension, overwhelmed by the shock of losing the presence of Jesus yet again. Will absence make the heart grow fonder, or will it be a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’? Some are looking back, longing for it to have been a mistake, hoping against hope that they’ll see Jesus where they left him, emerging from the mist, following after them towards Jerusalem. Some have their heads bowed, and look down, despondently, but they are resigned to his departure. Some are impatient, even cross – ‘Well, now what do we do?’ hear them say. Peter and John on the other hand, have their heads high; they are resolutely facing the city, determined to carry out Jesus’ promises. Even if they feel abandoned by him, they will not let him down, knowing it’s their message that Jesus is counting on now (v. 20)...
