The door to my study was open when the telephone rang in the hall, so I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation, or rather this end of it. And what I heard was quite disturbing.

‘How could you think I imagined that . . .?’

‘But I didn’t say anything of the kind . . . ’

‘No, you’ve got it wrong; I don’t know who told you that story . . .’

‘Look, I’m very sorry, but I honestly think you’ve misjudged the whole situation . . . ’
