Whether it was sunny or snowing, whether it was day or night, whether the ship was on course or off course, the compass was the vital sign that told the sailors which direction they were going. There were other problems, of course – a cloudy night would mean no stars, and no stars meant that they wouldn’t know how far north or south they were – but the compass remained at the heart of the ship’s operation...
