John 8.21-29

‘The house is on fire! Get up at once!’

She burst into the dormitory where several of the other girls were sleeping. She dashed to the nearest bed and shook the sleeper violently.

‘Come on! There’s no time! You’ll be burnt alive!’

‘Go back to sleep!’ came the reply. ‘It’s just one of your stupid nightmares! Stop making a nuisance of yourself!’

‘Well, I’m going out right now!’ she said. ‘And if you don’t come with me, you’ll all be fried in your beds!’

Would you believe someone shouting at you in the middle of the night? Well, it might depend on whether you trusted them anyway. You might at least think it was worth finding out. But finding out meant getting out of bed on a cold night; and that meant waking up properly, when what you most wanted was to drift straight back off to sleep . . .
