The Second Sunday before Advent - Year A

Meditation on Matthew 24: 14-30

Gaze on a man with a metal detector,
slowly inching across a field or a beach,
searching for buried treasure. Sometimes
he’ll turn up an odd Roman coin, or a
Tudor brooch, or a broken pot. But
occasionally someone hits the jackpot
and finds a hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold
and silver, hidden, centuries ago, by
someone in a time of conflict, worried
that if they were invaded by the enemy,
they would lose all their wealth. So in
the dead of night they went out into the
woods or down to the end of their garden,
took a spade and dug deep into the clay...
