There is some adversity, though not all, that we bring on ourselves. We need to be cautious about this, because the first reaction we have to calamities is to imagine that God must be punishing us for something we have done. As Jesus made clear of a man born blind, that is not how God operates in his world. Nevertheless, there are consequences to our actions and sometimes we say or do what we know to be wrong and experience dire results. However much we may try to rationalize and excuse our behaviour we are left with a conscience that is seared and restless, and ‘the sorrows of [our] heart are enlarged’...
